CAMPASPE (1896)

No.18

Campaspe or Pancaste was a mistress of Alexander the Great and a prominent citizen of Larissa. She was painted by Apelles. In Pliny's Natural History it is recorded that, when Alexander saw the beauty of the nude portrait, he realised that the artist loved Campaspe more than he did. So Alexander kept the portrait and presented Campaspe to Apelles.
